It’s been a pretty crazy and awesome college basketball season so far, it is every year. We’re nearing March and getting to the later part of conference play. It’s time to start thinking futures and there is one number right now I just absolutely do not understand. That is Villanova at 55/1. I’ve been following futures for a while now and seeing this number just made me have to write an article.
Let’s start with the fact that they are the defending national champs, have the best coach in the country at maximizing and working with the roster he has, and they have won 12 out of 13 games. The thing with Villanova this year is they actually lack talent like past years, but they still have plenty of experience and Jay Wright has done an amazing job of developing these young guys. I look at Villanova and even with this perceived lack of talent they still have the #8 offense in the country according to kenpom. They still have dudes. Phil Booth was the MVP of Nova’s first title 3 years ago. He’s still here. Eric Paschall has turned into a swiss army knife who can do it all. He physically dominates guys who try to match up with him and he’s going to be a big reason of why they make a run again because he is just a matchup nightmare. Joe Cremo has been playing well lately and is another guy who can shoot the 3 well. This team is just deep and the experience of Booth and Paschall can take you a long way in the tourney. The thing I love about Nova is they get 42% of their points from the 3 point line. That’s good for 8th in the country. I’ve got a team with the number 8 offense and shoots the 3 very well at 55/1 with Jay Wright at head coach. Sign me up.
There’s also one other thing about Villanova I want to touch on is that they have a potential wild card or x factor come tournament time. I’m talking about Jahvon Quinerly. Quinerly was a very high recruit or almost left the program midseason and really just has not fit in so far. Quinerly is getting minutes and some run, but really has done nothing special. The thing is he’s such a talent and has shown subtle flashes I don’t think it is crazy that come March he plays a role and is a possible X factor. Villanova could really use another scorer and shot creator. That’s exactly what Quinerly was suppose to be. That can still happen. Just something to think about.
