The third base position has some really good talent and if you feel like waiting in your drafts there are options for you. When it comes to CI this may be the position for you unless you like some of the late 1B targets. Let’s see where the standings now sit with the UPDATED 2019 Fantasy Baseball Third Base Rankings.
|1 – Nolan Arenado||2 – Jose Ramirez|
|3 – Alex Bregman||4 – Kris Bryant|
|5 – Eugenio Suarez||6 – Anthony Rendon|
|7 – Javy Baez||8 – Matt Chapman|
|9 – Travis Shaw||10 – Vladimir Guerrero Jr.|
|11 – Matt Carpenter||12 – Justin Turner|
|13 – Mike Moustakas||14 – Josh Donaldson|
|15 – Max Muncy||16 – Miguel Andujar|
|17 – Wil Myers||18 – Rafael Devers|
|19 – Asdrubal Cabrera||20 – Jake Lamb|
The top of the rankings is up for debate as many have Jose Ramirez ahead of Arenado and mainly due to his steals upside. I’ll go Nolan Arenado, in Coors with his potential to hit 40 homeruns, drive in 120+ runs and hit for a really really nice BA.
At 3 I have Alex Bregman. I am a huge Bregman fan. He will hit for high average and contribute in all categories, just not as much as Arenado and Ramirez. Also, the elbow and back injuries have to cause a little, and I mean little concern.
Kris Bryant comes in at 4 and he’s on everyone’s bounce back list. He spent most of 2018 hurt and if healthy could be in for a monster year in Chicago. Wouldn’t be shocked if Bryant finishes as the top 3B by season’s end, but a lot of risk for another rough season as well.
The 5 and 6 ranked players are some of my favorite. Eugenia Suarez and Anthony Rendon are 2 of the 3B I really look to own on draft day. I have Suarez slightly ahead of Rendon and it’s mainly for that home run upside. Both are outstanding hitters and you can’t go wrong with either.
Javy Baez comes in at 7. His multi position eligibility is outstanding. He had a MVP type season in 2018. But that hit tool and lack of discipline leaves a very very low floor at his current draft pick. He could be a phenomenal hitter again, or ruin your early draft pick. I won’t own him this year.
My 8th 3B is one of my favorites. If I am waiting at the position I am hoping to get all the Matt Chapman. His Statcast page jumps off the screen. He could be in for a 30-35 home run season if he can just elevate the ball a little. Love Matt Chapman this year.
At 9 I have Travis Shaw. The Brew Crew 3B will also be eligible at 2B this year and brings insane power at this point in the draft. He’s still developing as a hitter and the average should come up as well.
Due to recent injuries the Vladito, Vladimir Guerrero Jr drops to 10th. With his recent oblique injury there’s a good chance we don’t see him until May. That still leaves plenty of time to produce, but also makes him tougher to draft in the 45-50 range.
The 3B position still leaves a lot to like after the Top 10. I really like the power you can get from Mike Moustakas. You could receive insane value from Josh Donaldson if the comeback is complete. Justin Turner can supply some great BA help later on. Wil Myers is always there to add 20+ stolen base upside. Finally there are the young studs like Rafael Devers and Jake Lamb.
There’s a lot to like at 3B. It’s very top heavy but does have some nice depth as well. It does drop off a bit after the Top 20 or so, so don’t wait too long.
