Well, 3 for 3 on Rubies making the cut was a good week. None of them did much to speak of on the weekend, but they certainly could have helped contribute to everyone’s 6/6 numbers had they been played.
Ruby #1: Carlos Ortiz ($6700)– When I first saw this pricing, I was a little shocked at how low he was given this field’s strength. He finished 4th her last year, albeit in a weaker field than this year, but not by much. Ortiz finished 35th at the ZOZ while losing 5.7 strokes putting. He is more of a POA putting specialist, but he’s not 5.7 strokes lost badly on Bermuda. Ortiz gained 6.4 strokes on approach at the ZOZO and one on approach at the CJ Cup. Coming off two missed cuts in his last two full-field events is my assumption why he is priced this low. He was struggling with his irons until the previous two events.
Ruby #2: Matthew Nesmith ($7000)– Nesmith is coming off three consecutive made cuts and six straight positive strokes gained on approach appearances. He is a streaky putter but tends to be a well above average putter on everything except POA. Being on Bermuda this week is good for him. He gained 4.6 on approach at the Shriners in route to an 8th place finish. Back to back top 20 finishes at Sanderson Farms and Shriners is a good sign as well. He has been steadily improving lately, and his T2G game has been stellar. I like him a lot this week to get out, possibly early, and shoot a low score on Thursday.
Ruby #3: Sepp Straka ($7000)– Sepp played decent in Bermuda with a. 21st place finish. He gained 6.4 strokes in total at Bermuda. Coming off a solid performance at Shriners. He has gained tee to green going all the way back to the Northern Trust. His tee to green game has been on point, and his approach game has been improving. He gains slightly putting on Bermuda, which we are on this week. He finished 4th here last year, coming off an MC in his previous start.
Good Luck this week
