Week 9 starts with Memorial Day for our fantasy baseball week, so make sure to get your lineups set early. There are a few teams whose rotations have a TBD days, leaving us with less known streamers to choose from. Keep an eye on starting pitcher announcements as these TBD days get closer to determine if there are any worthy streamers.
Pitchers to stream will be listed with their team, their probable opponent(s) for the week, and their ownership percentages on ESPN and Yahoo.
Steven Matz – New York Mets
5/28 @ LAD, 6/2 @ ARI
ESPN: 36%, Yahoo: 43%
Seeing Matz with ownership less than 50% is slightly surprising. The Mets are still a .500 team, but their offense has not always been there to support Matz. His last start resulted in a no-decision against the Nationals, where he pitched six innings, got seven strikeouts, and only allowed one run. He’s given up just two runs or less in seven of nine starts this season, and is averaging a strikeout an inning. For Week 9, Matz has a two-start week against the Dodgers and D-Backs, on the road. While two road starts is less than ideal, he is one of the better streaming options, or a potential keep if you need a rotation spot to fill without the worry of streaming. If you don’t need him for both starts, you’ll certainly want him for the game in Arizona.
Dylan Bundy – Baltimore Orioles
5/28 vs. DET
ESPN: 24%, Yahoo: 9%
If there’s a time to stream Bundy, it’s against one of the worst teams in baseball. His Week 9 start comes against the Tigers, at home. Bundy has been decent, but like Matz, the Orioles haven’t provided the offense needed to get wins for him. This may be the case again, as Matthew Boyd is projected to be the Tigers’ starter for this game. Bundy’s K/9 is at 9.00, and the Tigers strikeout at a rate of 26% as team, but walks and home runs are an issue. The Tigers have hit the second least home runs, so Bundy will need to take advantage of their lack of power.
Jeff Samardzija – San Francisco Giants
5/28 @ MIA, 6/2 @ BAL
ESPN: 9%, Yahoo: 14%
Samardzija has been ok this season. You will want to pick and choose when you want to stream him, and Week 9 may be the best matchups we’ll get for him. He has starts on the road, against the Marlins and Orioles. Samardzija’s earned runs given up has been decent, with three allowed in eight starts. The strikeout expectation isn’t high, but expectedly so for a pitcher who doesn’t have high ownership. If you’re streaming Samardzija, go into this week without the expectation of the win, because the Giants themselves are a pretty bad offense. Hopefully, what we’ll get is a low earned run total and four to five strikeouts.
Previously mentioned streamers
Sonny Gray – Cincinnati Reds
5/27 vs. PIT
ESPN: 19%, Yahoo: 37%
Gray is still having some tough luck, as I mentioned in Week 5’s Pitching Primer.
Lance Lynn – Texas Rangers
5/27 @ SEA, 6/1 vs. KCR
ESPN: 9%, Yahoo: 27%
If you didn’t stream Lynn for Week 8, you may want to for Week 9. Check Week 8’s Pitching Primer, for my thoughts on Lynn.
