Welcome to what feels like the official start to the 2021 PGA TOUR season where previous season winners flock to Kapalua, earning a check for hoisting a trophy the year before. This year many players have been invited to play even if they weren’t victorious in 2020. Fortunately, we’ll enjoy watching 8 of the top 10 players in the world tee it up this Thursday even though golf isn’t in season for many of us.
For 2021 I’ll post a brief write-up with my bets, and maybe a few Draft Kings plays via Fantasy Sports Degens. I will do my best to explain why I’m throwing money at certain guys each week. Outrights, First Round Leader, Head-to-Head, and other plays will be seen throughout the season. It’s mostly for fun, and my enjoyment, so do with it what you will. As a Golf Professional, I love this stuff and know it’s a significant avenue to continue to grow the game of golf. So, let’s tee it up!!!
Kapalua’s Plantation Course is what we’d refer to as a “Big Ball Park.” It’s a par 73 with massive elevation changes throughout the course. Only 3 Par 3’s are in play, with 4 Par 5’s lending to great scoring opportunities with this unique layout. You don’t have to be a bomber to win here, although it certainly doesn’t hurt (Zach Johnson has won here). Most definitely, you’ll need guys who can take it deep and go low for at least 2 of the four rounds.
Patrick Reed ($25 to win $375): Captain America, Taco Tits, Fat Pat, whatever your preference in nickname is doesn’t matter to me. Reed loves playing in loaded fields…3 Top 6’s here since 2016 with two Runner-Up finishes. His win at the WGC Mexico helped punch his ticket to Kapalua. I fully expect Pat to be here late Sunday.
Tony Finau ($25 to win $625): I’m not a Finau guy if you follow me on Twitter…Biggest issue is the guy simply can’t putt…Can’t tap in! BUT in a field with only 42 players, this number has too much value for a guy who can easily contend for a W. I struggle with guys who can’t close, Finau, Rickie (Don’t let @gfienberg17 see this), but a bold prediction from me this year is Finau breaks out…Wins twice on TOUR, maybe his first is here at Kapalua!
Harris English ($25 to win $750): 30/1 for one of the most underappreciated guys on tour in a short field event….Sign me up! Lovesome HARRY ENGLISH this week. Harris ranks in the Top 10 in 4 of the six stat categories I’m looking at this week. Too good of a number to pass up here!
Adam Scott ($25 to win $1,125): Aussies LOVE this event. Stuart Appleby won 3 straight here 2004-2006, Geoff Ogilvy won here 2009-2010….Not that either of those guys matters to me playing Scottie here at 45/1. Again, a number play that is too hard to not take a stab at.
There are a lot of opportunities in an event like this. Don’t be surprised to see additions to this card after a round or two. JT, X, Rahm are all guys who can easily show up on the card should the number climb higher if they don’t get off to a HOT start.
Head 2 Head:
Marc Leishman ($50 to win $80) vs. Billy Horschel: Leish has some success here, and this number is off. Not many events I’d take Billy Ho over Leish in the first place. While the Aussie didn’t have a great 2020, he did finish strong at Augusta. Marc also has 2 top 10’s here, while Billy Ho hasn’t finished better than 11th in a couple of tries. I’ll take this all day…
Justin Thomas ($50 to win $50) vs. Dustin Johnson: Who knows what DJ has been up to since snagging the Green Jacket. We know JT has played some and won here last year. Both have won this event twice, and both have tremendous course history. The coin flip, give me EVEN money on the guy who will spend more weeks as world #1 this year than any other player.
First Round Leader (FRL): Think of this as a horse race, one round to see who can GO LOW! These are a lot of fun unless your guy is even through 7-8 holes. We’ll focus more on wave rotation and the importance of weather conditions; for the TOC, it’s wide open!
Patrick Cantlay ($25 to win $450): Really like Cantlay this week but more so in Draft Kings, where he goes over-looked. Not a ton of value as it’s a short field event, but I think he could go low Thursday.
Daniel Berger ($25 to win $625): What a restart for Berger, winning at Colonial and staying hot through the end of the year. I like Berger this week, and when his putter gets hot, it gets HOT. Let’s hope it’s on fire Thursday.
Sebastian Munoz ($25 to win $1,875): When you talk about guys who can take it deep Thursday, you think of Ryan Palmer, Rory Sabbs, and Sebastian Munoz. These guys love to go low early, make the cut, and peter off on the weekend. You’ll see me play a lot of Palmer, Sabbatini, and Munoz as FRL’s in 2021.
Let’s all enjoy the first event of the year, playoff Football, Golf in Hawaii, and wagers to root for Thursday – Sunday. Any questions, please hit me up on Twitter @KevinsDelight or in our Slack Chat. Any updated plays will be added in the Slack! Just ask us for an invite, and we’ll get you in. $275 is in-play….Let’s see if we make anything to start the 2021 year…
